As a schoolboy, art and architecture were by far and away his favourite subjects. He then did his national Service and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant into the Kings Royal Rifle Corps. During his two years, he painted water colours, only his work was extremely limited, but nevertheless, it got him into an art school; One of London's foremost academies, the Byam Shaw School of Art, surrounded by some fifty or so extremely enthusiastic young students.

He worked under the tutelage of the brilliant artist, Bernhard Dunstan RA and after a year and a half, he was forced to leave in order to earn a living. So, in the tradition of his family, he went onto the stage, where he remained for the next 50-60 years. This meant he had moments of unemployment, so was able to continue painting both in the UK and America. He has exhibited in both LA and London galleries.

The project to make John's artwork prints available for sale was a collaboration with his son Alexander.
